The oyster farming monitoring effort was adapted to meet the specific needs of mariculture enterprises based on the Magdalen Islands. The data gathered during this effort should meet its principal objective – enable mariculturers to make informed decisions and thus, plan their eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) grow-out and conditioning operations optimally.

Farmed mussels were monitored during the 2014-2015 production season in three maritime Québec regions – on the Magdalen Islands, the Gaspé Peninsula and the North Shore. Researchers wanted to gather data that would help enterprises make informed operations-related decisions while production was underway.

Sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) farmers in maritime Québec have sought for several years to market their live product on urban markets in Québec City and Montréal. The Magdalen Islands firm Culti-mer inc. currently ships live scallops to these markets by air freight. However, live scallops have a short shelf life and shipping them by plane is weatherdependant. So the objective of this project was to manage to extend their shelf life once they have reached markets in major urban centres.

Merinov has conducted a study on the distribution of carotenoids, specifically astaxanthin, in the coproducts generated by crustacean processing. It examined coproducts from northern shrimp, snow crab, rock crab and lobster.

Scallop culture monitoring was adapted to take into account the specific needs of scallop farmers in three maritime Québec regions: the Magdalen Islands, the Gaspé Peninsula and the North Shore. The information gathered had to address the program's main objective which was to help farmers make informed decisions to plan their sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) production operations as well as possible.

The sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) coproduct enhancement project was conducted in partnership with an enterprise in Cloridorme on the Gaspé Peninsula (Poissonnerie de Cloridorme inc.) that processes this marine species. The plant processed 400 t in 2013 and 680 t in 2014. Coproducts account for about 60 percent of the processed volume; about 30 to 40 percent of these coproducts can be recovered post processing.

Although mussel spat supply has generally been reliable since the early 1990s in the Havre Aubert lagoon (Magdalen Islands, Québec), very poor settlement rates were recorded there in the 2004 and 2006 seasons. Six hypotheses have been put forward to explain this lack of success...
