Sea scallop fishing (Placopecten magellanicus) in the SFA 20 is doing well, with stable landings over the last decade. In an effort to reduce their environmental footprint without compromising their catch efficiency, fishermen looked into a new dredge system (N-VirodredgeTM) seemingly offering promising results in this regard. However, as the N-Viro has never been tested in Québec, it is crucial to evaluate its performance on the local fishing grounds (including the SFA 20) before considering its use. Experimental trips were thus held in the fall of 2019 on the three main fishing grounds located in the southern part of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine (i.e. Chaîne-de-la-Passe, Dix-Milles and Pointe-du-Ouest). The two-tier project took place on board two commercial vessels that are usually using the Digby dredge, as all fishermen do in this SFA.
